History of Winthrop: The town of Winthrop has always
been known as "The Friendliest Town for Miles Around." In our community
you will find small town atmosphere, with friendly people, well-kept
homes, lawns, and a safe, clean environment which makes it a great
place to raise a family.
The community of Winthrop is dedicated to growth and continued
development, as shown in the development of the new Residential
Subdivision Area. The new subdivision has 25 developed lots that
provide all services and streets for prospective homeowners. This
development provides excellent building opportunities at moderate
building costs with reasonable taxes.
Take a walk down Winthrop's main street where you'll be pleasantly
surprised at the number of progressive businesses that provide services
and opportunities for employment in this town of 768 people. These
include a full service bank, large modern super market with a deli and
a catering service, agri-businesses with feed supply service, grain
storage, farm chemical supplies, farm equipment repair, a welding and
metal fabrication shop, a full service gas station and auto repair
shop, a landscape service, a large furniture store, funeral home,
barber shop, numerous styling shops, a hometown newspaper, insurance
service, a lumber yard and many local construction firms.
Winthrop is the main office of the East Buchanan Telephone
Coop which serves the towns of Aurora, Quasqueton, Stanley,
and Winthrop. It is recognized as one of the most modern and
progressive Telephone Coop in Iowa, providing a full range of
communication services ranging from basic phone service, to a Digital
Satellite System that provides service to over 1000 Buchanan County
residents. The Coop also provides over 50 channels of digital cable
programming to their customers. Computer owners may subscribe to
internet service.

Winthrop Industrial Development: Recently, 74 acres
on and north of US 20 has been annexed into the city limits of
Winthrop. This site has been served with city sewer and water in the
spring of 2002. This area is ready to be developed for industrial and
commercial purposes. Contact BCDEC at (319) 334-7497 for more

Winthrop Community Resources: Winthrop has a modern
multi-use City Building that houses the City Hall, Fire Department, and
Library. Volunteer firefighters, First Responders and EMT's staff the
fire department. The Winthrop
Public Library has over 10,000 books, reference materials,
and audiocassette books that may be borrowed. The Iowa Locator Service
is used to locate materials not found in the local library. It is open
every day except Sunday and has an evening hour once a week. It's
extended services include computers, copy and fax machines, Storytime,
the Summer Reading Program, and delivery of reading materials to
Senior Citizen.
Recreation Opportunities: The city offers
recreational opportunities throughout the summer. A community childcare
center opened in March of 2004. In the summer of 2002 the town opened a
new municipal pool. Householder Park with its 2 large shelter houses is
ideal for family activities and reunions. The facility provides
playground equipment, swimming pool, and a newly renovated baseball
field in one convenient location.
Buffalo Creek Country Club, a challenging nine hole golf course is
located a few minutes north of town, is open to the public. Nearby
Buffalo Creek Conservation Park affords opportunities to observe nature
as well as sites for primitive camping. For fitness enthusiast, there
is a fitness trail located on the campus of East Buchanan Community
School.
During the summer, community groups support baseball, softball, and
swim programs that provide recreation for young people. In winter
months, the school gym is open for early morning exercise walkers and
for adults to participate in intramural activities.
