Basic Safety Tips for Families Online

Here are some basic safety tips Parents may want to consider for family online use.

  • Parents should consider using filter software or similar services available through commercial online services.

  • Place the computer in a central area of the home, like a den or living room and make the Internet a family activity.

  • Be interested in what your child is doing online and monitor the amount of time they spend online.

  • Make sure your children understand not everybody is who they claims to be online and not to give out any personal or identifying information without checking with a parent.

  • Discuss appropriate Internet use and most important, stay actively involved, know their friends and what they are spending online time on.

  • Keep up with Internet technology. Make a contract clearly stating what the limits of Internet use is.
