During the 2003-04 school year we worked on the technology component of the CSIP Plan. The following reflects the work of the District Technology Committee (Melissa Hesner, Brian Cole, Barb Butera, Mike Stafford, Lois Loughren, Jill Fox, Abbey Thurn, Barb Reed, Barb Sabin, Kate Lindsay, Courtney Ford, Keith W. Dennie and Mark McCright) towards this goal:

  • Technology Literacy Statement: Technology literacy is the ability to responsibly use appropriate technology to communicate, solve problems, and access, manage, integrate, evaluate, and create information to improve learning in all subject areas and to acquire lifelong knowledge and skills in the 21st century.

  • Technology Standards and Benchmarks for Teachers

    Standard 1--Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts.

    • Benchmark 1.1 Demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described in the ISTE National Education Technology Standards for Students)

    • Benchmark 1.2 Demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.

    Specific Indicators:
    • Comfortable using tool/productivity software
    • Awareness of “best-known practice”
    • Uses terminology related to computers and technology
    • Comfortable installing basic software
    • Performs basic troubleshooting
    • Has a basic understanding of operating systems
    • Can use scanners, digital cameras, and other input/output devices
    • Awareness of adaptive technology resources.

    Standard 2--Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology.

    • Benchmark 2.1 Design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.
    • Benchmark 2.2 Apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.
    • Benchmark 2.3 Identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.
    • Benchmark 2.4 Plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.
    • Benchmark 2.5 Plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment.

    Standard 3--Teachers implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning.

    • Benchmark 3.1 Facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
    • Benchmark 3.2 Use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.
    • Benchmark 3.3 Apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity.
    • Benchmark 3.4 Manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.

    Standard 4--Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies.

    • Benchmark 4.1 Apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
    • Benchmark 4.2 Use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
    • Benchmark 4.3 Apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.

    • Uses performance tasks when appropriate

    Standard 5--Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice.

    • Benchmark 5.1 Use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
    • Benchmark 5.2 Continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning.
    • Benchmark 5.3 Apply technology to increase productivity.
    • Benchmark 5.4 Use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.

    Standard 6--Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice. Teachers:

    • Benchmark 6.1 Model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.
    • Benchmark 6.2 Apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
    • Benchmark 6.3 Identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity
    • Benchmark 6.4 Promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.
    • Benchmark 6.5 Facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.

    Specific Indicators:
    • Awareness of technology health/safety issues
    • Models and teaches copyright laws
    • Protects student privacy in regards to technology use
    • Awareness of technology security issues.

  • Technology Standards, Benchmarks and Critical Objectives for Students

    Standard 1--Communication

    Each student understands a variety of technology tools to communicate effectively and creatively.

    Benchmark 1.1 Produces documents using a word processor.

    Critical Objectives (By grade level)

  • PK-2 Demonstrates simple editing tools such as the delete key, space bar, return, and mouse functions. Save and print a document.
  • 3-5 Writes a document using spell checker, and cut and paste tool. Uses a word processor to revise and publish own writing.
  • 6-8 Writes a document with a graphic using thesaurus and dictionary. Uses advanced editing and text formatting tools.
  • 9-12 Writes a document using spell and grammar checkers and making use of graphics.

    Benchmark 1.2 Communicates (shares information) through data networks and global telecommunications.

    Critical Objectives (By grade level)

  • PK-2 Uses a telephone.
  • 3-5 Uses e-mail to request and send information globally concerning research for class project with teacher assistance.
  • 6-8 Uses e-mail to communicate locally and globally. Collaborates on simple projects and share information over network. Publishes work on the Internet.
  • 9-12 Collaborates between 2 groups to complete a project.

    Benchmark 1.3 Creates, publishes and communicates ideas by using multimedia tools.

    Critical Objectives (By grade level)

  • PK-2 Open and create simple pictures with painting and drawing programs. Uses clipboard to take objects from one place to another with teacher assistance.
  • 3-5 Awareness of the use of a video camera to record simple events and classroom projects. Edits clip art and imports graphics. Creates a presentation using multimedia software with sound, graphics, and text to share ideas.
  • 6-8 Presents projects developed using multimedia software with sound, graphics, and multiple sources of information.
  • 9-12 Creates formal multimedia presentations combining charts, bullet text and images.

    Standard 2--Information Processing

    Each student knows a variety of technology tools to gather, interpret, evaluate and apply information from various media.

    Benchmark 2.1 Uses an electronic data base to locate information.

    Critical Objectives (By grade level)

  • PK-2 Locates visual information on electronic sources, such as CD-ROM.
  • 3-5 Uses on-line catalogs to find materials by doing an author, title and subject search to find a particular fact, such as a book title, capital or country or state.
  • 6-8 Locates information from a pre-made database and adds or deletes information. Conducts a keyword search combining two terms using “and,” “or” and “not”. Compares multiple information sources in different indexes.
  • 9-12 Uses a variety of electronic sources to access resources and media, such as, long distance learning, and applies sophisticated search techniques like Boolean logic and wild cards to collate, interpret, and publish a research project.

    Benchmark 2.2 Selects appropriate information by analyzing and evaluating it.

    Critical Objectives (By grade level)

  • PK-2 Locates information in electronic reference materials such as dictionaries, beginning encyclopedias, and atlases with teacher assistance.
  • 3-5 Evaluates electronic reference materials such as encyclopedias and on-line materials for relevancy.
  • 6-8 Occasionally locates and uses appropriate computer resources and technologies available beyond the school through the Internet.
  • 9-12 Evaluates internet resources for relevancy. Routinely locates and uses electronic resources available beyond the school through the internet.

    Benchmark 2.3 Organizes information in a clear, concise manner to create a finished product.

    Critical Objectives (By grade level)

  • PK-2 Uses video camera to record events with teacher assistance.
  • 3-5 Create a multimedia project using text and graphics.
  • 6-8 Create a database, pamphlet, or newsletter using multiple sources of information.
  • 9-12 Creates formal multimedia presentations combining charts, bulleted text and images.

    Standard 3--Productivity
    Each student understands technology to maximize productivity and effectiveness.

    Benchmark 3.1 Develops keyboarding skills.

    Critical Objectives (By grade level)

  • PK-2 Uses basic command keys such as return key, space bar, delete key, arrow keys, caps lock, etc.
  • 3-5 Consistently uses left and right hands on home row keys, and uses correct fingering for return key and space bar.
  • 6-8 Develops keyboarding skills to 20-25 wpm with 80% accuracy on timed test.
  • 9-12 Develops keyboarding skills to 30 wpm using correct body posture and finger placement 100% of the time.

    Benchmark 3.2 Uses instructional software in content areas.

    Critical Objectives (By grade level)

  • PK-2 Correctly opens, uses and quits software programs.
  • 3-5 Creates simple databases with teacher assistance.
  • 6-8 Creates databases and charts from spreadsheets.
  • 9-12 Use specialized software for content areas and creates spreadsheets.

    Benchmark 3.3 Navigates computer systems.

    Critical Objectives (By grade level)

  • PK-2 Identifies physical components of the computer system such as keyboard, monitor, printer, mouse, etc. Turns on and shuts down the computer properly.
  • 3-5 Finds a file, saves a file, and copies a file.
  • 6-8 Moves between different computer applications or programs. Cut and paste text between two documents, get information on a file or program.
  • 9-12 Organizes documents into folders. Moves between desktop, the Internet or CD-ROM drive to access and store information. Setup and run a computer presentation without delays.

    Standard 4--Technology Awareness
    Each student understands the benefits, limitations and responsibilities related to technology use.

    Benchmark 4.1 Develops an understanding of the wide use of technology for information gathering and processing, industry and manufacturing, and medicine and scientific research.

    Critical Objectives (By grade level)

  • PK-2 Shares personal experiences regarding technology.
  • 3-5 Explains how technology is used in industry, business and education.
  • 6-8 Explains how technology promotes a global society, identifies technological skills needed for jobs.
  • 9-12 Identifies examples and analyzes the impact of technology on society.

    Benchmark 4.2 Practices safe and responsible technology use.

    Critical Objectives (By grade level)

  • PK-2 Takes turns using technology. Uses appropriate language and behavior while using technology. Demonstrates respect for technology equipment.
  • 3-5 States that violation of copyright law is a crime. Leave equipment in a manner others can use it. Identifies and practices appropriate safety measures while on-line.
  • 6-8 Discriminates between ethical and unethical access to computer files. Identifies examples of copyright law violations and possible penalties. Demonstrates and uses ergonomically appropriate posture to perform tasks.
  • 9-12 Models ethical behavior and acceptable practice in the use of technology and technological resources.
