The
American Legion
wrote Need A Lift, a college financial
aid guide, to spare you frustration and save you time as you plan your
"after-high-school" education.
While the focus of this guide is to help children of deceased and
disabled veterans in their pursuit of higher education, all students can
benefit from the information offered. This guide is filled with
scholarships, grants, fee waivers, student loans, and the organizations that
offer them. Also included is information
to help you select a school, apply for student financial aid using the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), learn about loan forgiveness,
understand tax credits, and much more!
Distinguished
Young Women of Iowa Scholarship Program, formerly Iowa Junior Miss
Scholarship program, is available to all senior girls in high school. Scholarships in sums of $350 to $1,500
will be awarded. Participants are evaluated in the
following categories: Scholastics (20% of overall score), Interview (25% of
overall score), Talent (25% of overall score), Fitness (15% of overall score),
and Self-Expression (15% of overall score). Preliminary programs are tentatively scheduled for October and
November 2011. The state program is
held in Ottumwa, Iowa, in March 2012.

WendyÕs High
School Heisman Program recognizes seniors who exhibit excellence in the classroom,
on the field, and within their communities. Student must have a least a ÒBÓ grade
average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport. The first 30,000 students that complete
an application will receive a WendyÕs Gift Card in sum of $10! The online application at www.wendysheisman.com
must be completed by the student and confirmed by Counselor by October 2.
*AES Engineers is pleased to be able to
continue providing $500 scholarships to high school seniors or college students
(regardless of courses being studied) who meet certain criteria. You are not
required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible. Students must submit an essay of no more
than 1000 words in answer to one of the two questions that are posted on our
site: www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm. Deadline is October 5, 2012.
UNI Art Scholarship in sum of $1,500-6,000/per year is
available to incoming freshmen.
Applicant must major in Art: studio, education, or history. Complete the Department of Art

Horatio Alger
National Scholarship Program is awarding 104 $20,000 scholarships to
eligible students in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto
Rico. National Scholars receive an all expenses paid trip to Washington D.C.
during the spring of their senior year to participate in the National Scholars
Conference. Student must have
financial need, be involved in co-curricular and community activities, and have
at least a 2.0 GPA. See www.horatioalger.com/scholarships

COCA-COLA
SCHOLARS PROGRAM - Each year 50
awards are for $20,000, payable in equal installments over a four-year period,
and another 200 awards for $10,000, also payable over a four-year period. The scholarship can be used for any line
of study at any accredited U.S. college or university. Scholarships awarded to seniors are
based on leadership, community commitment, academic achievement, and
employment. Applicant must be carrying a minimum
3.00 GPA at the end of their junior year. Apply online at: www.coca-colascholars.org. Deadline is October 31.
Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will
make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically,
exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service
activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen
or hold a permanent resident visa card.
Each year, a minimum of ten students will be designated Ron Brown
Scholars and will receive $10,000 annually for four years, for a total of
$40,000. The recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend an
accredited four-year college or university of their choice within the United

deadlines for applications: November 1st - application will be
considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program AND forwarded to a select and
limited number of additional scholarship providers. January 9th - final
postmarked deadline in order to be considered for only the Ron Brown Scholar

*Dr Pepper is sponsoring a
nationwide promotion this 2011 college football season in which they are giving
away $1,000,000 in tuition assistance. Scholarship America's Scholarship
Management Services is partnering with Dr Pepper to help distribute the tuition
assistance payments. To enter the promotion, entrants must have access to
the internet and the capability to upload a short video. Promotion is open to anyone over the age
of 18. Entrants submit a one-minute video explaining how they would make
an impact in their life, their community, or the world if they won free tuition
from Dr Pepper. Throughout the football season, over 60 students will be
awarded $2,500 in tuition assistance from Dr Pepper. Dr Pepper will
select an additional 25 grand prize winners who will be invited to attend with
one guest one of the five end-of-season football games (the SEC, ACC, Big
10, Pac 12, and Cotton Bowl) to compete in a contest at halftime.
Selection of these grand prize winners will be limited to students under the
age of 25. The students will be given a chance to throw for $100,000 in
tuition during the halftime of the game. The winner will walk away with
$100,000 in tuition and the runner-up will receive

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is a unique opportunity honoring
young people for outstanding volunteer service. Students in grades 5-12 who have been
involved in a volunteer activity are eligible. Students complete an online application

East Buchanan may submit one MS and one HS application. State Honorees receive $1,000 and
all-expense-paid trip with a parent to Washington, D.C. in May for several

Dell Scholars

*The
Voice of Democracy is an audio essay
contest for students in grades 9-12. The annual contest, which is designed to
foster patriotism, allows students the opportunity to voice their opinion in a
three to five minute essay based on patriotism. Students can enter by
submitting the required entry form, along with their essay and recording to a
local VFW Post--Independence. The scholarship program annually provides more
than $3 million in scholarships. The first-place national winner receives a
$30,000 scholarship. Besides competing for the top scholarship prize, as well
as other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $16,000, each
Department's first-place winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to
Washington, D.C. Entry form may be

College of Business Administration at University
of Northern Iowa would like to invite high school seniors who intend to
major in business and are considering attending UNI to apply to participate in
the UNI Business Freshman Scholarship Day!
In order to qualify for an invitation, students must have both ACT math
and composite scores of 27 or higher.

compete for scholarships that will range from one-year $2,000 to 4-year
renewable $6,500 scholarships. Application

Wartburg
Presidential & Regents Scholarships will be awarded
in sums of $13,000-full tuition. To qualify, students must have a minimum ACT
score of 23 and rank in the top 25% of class and have a cum GPA of 3.5 or
above. All awards are based on merit, not financial need, and are renewable for
a maximum of eight terms, contingent upon full-time enrollment and a minimum

+Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association will award
seven scholarships (minimum of
$1,000) to college sophomore (or higher) students seeking degrees in
areas of study relating to careers in the ready mixed concrete and
construction/engineering industries.

The Hagan Scholarship Foundation provides scholarships in sums up to
$5,000/8 semesters to students living in an eligible state and in a county

UNI Department of Theatre awards over
$45,000 in tuition scholarships to its majors in sums of $750 to $2,500. Applicant must have a 3.0 GPA or rank in

PCI Academy (former The Salon
Professional Academy) will award one scholarship up to $3,000 per Iowa high

Dr. Howard Bowen Scholarship will be awarded to
five (5) students attending Grinnell College in sum of $25,000 per

National Foundation is offering 500 Most Valuable Student Scholarship Awards in

The AXA Achievement Scholarship, in
association with U.S. News & World Report and managed by Scholarship
America, provides $670,000 in annual scholarships to high school seniors
throughout the nation. Fifty-two
(52) scholarship recipients, known as AXA Achievers, will be selected –
one from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. These recipients
will receive one-time scholarships of $10,000 each. Ten (10) AXA Achievers will be selected
as national recipients from the pool of 52, earning an additional one-time
scholarship of $15,000, a computer and the offer of an internship at an AXA
office. AXA Achievers are ethnically
and economically diverse, but share these qualities: Ambition, drive and determination,
setting and reaching goals, respect for self, family and community, ability to

Scholarship Fund offers various scholarships in sums of $1,000-$12,000 to

*Iowa Firefighters Association will award a $500
scholarship to a high school or college student wishing to pursue educational
commitment in the field of fire science.
An application and essay of 500 words or less about goals, community
service, hobbies and why you want to receive a degree in fire science needs to
be submitted. Scholarship will be
paid to student with proof of first semester completion with a 3.00 GPA or

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation will be providing a minimum of 150 scholarships in sum of
$1,000-$10,000 to high school seniors showing entrepreneurial spirit and

The
E. Wayne Cooley Scholarship Award was established in 1993 as a tribute to
the man who served as Executive Director of the Iowa GirlsÕ High School
Athletic Union from 1954 through 2002. The recipient of this award is
recognized as being representative of the most elite of the superlative Iowa
Girl, not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom, in her school
and in her community. Her profile will reflect discipline, perseverance,
character, citizenship and leadership, which personified the life and
expectations of E. Wayne Cooley.
Each high school is limited to one nomination. The criteria for the award are as
follows: cum GPA 3.75+, ACT 23+, must have participated in at least two sports
each year of high school and shall have earned at least one varsity letter in a
minimum of two sports. Five
finalists will receive a $1,000 scholarship grant. The winner will receive a
$15,000 scholarship ($3,750 annually). Deadline December 30, 2011.
*Alice Madden Barton Scholarship program was created in memory of
Alice Madden Barton, the mother of Great Clips CEO Ray Barton and President
Rhoda Olsen. Scholarships are
available for current students, high school students and those pursuing a
career in cosmetology or barbering. These scholarships can be used at any

Turkey FederationÕs Academic Scholarship in sum of $250

*ISEA Scholarships for Future Teachers helps sons or
daughters of Association members become teachers. Applicants must have
completed 60 semester hours (or equivalent) or they must be considered a junior

enrollment in the teacher education program is also required. In addition,
applicants must also indicate by their transcript and a written statement their

McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship in
sum of up to $10,000 per academic year for 4 years and an additional $2,500 for
a summer abroad program is available to all high school seniors who have demonstrated
entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own business while in high
school. Started by Andy McKelvey,
former CEO of Monster.com and lifelong entrepreneur, the McKelvey Foundation
began the Entrepreneurial Scholarship program in 2004. To qualify student must a graduating
senior, attend a 4 year college or university, own and operate a genuine
business (non-profits are eligible), have at least one employee, even if only
part time. Application must be

Math Day at UNI is a recruiting event to tell
students and parents about mathematics programs and career opportunities in

The AXA Achievement Community Scholarship
Program brings advice and access to higher education into every community
in which AXA has a presence. Every AXA Advisors' branch office nationwide

Elks National Foundation presents 250 Legacy Awards in sum of

Hixson Opportunity Award is a half-tuition scholarship (4 yrs)
offered annually to a student from each of IowaÕs counties who will be
attending Iowa State University. The award recognizes the obstacles and
adversity some students face.

Iowa, A.F. & A.M. will be awarding approximately 60 scholarships in the

Multicultural Vision Program
Award (MVP) is a four-year
full tuition grant at Iowa State

The National Society
Daughters of the American Revolution awards multiple scholarships to
students showing dedication to the pursuit of degrees in diverse disciplines
including history, law, nursing, and education. Applicants must obtain a letter of
sponsorship from local DAR Chapter.

The Tim Dwight Foundation, Inc. Scholarship
Program awards scholarships
to students with academic merit, financial need, great potential and who have
overcome adversity or challenges to achieve success in their lives. Possible
examples of extenuating circumstances include but are not limited to students
from one-parent families; students with social, mental or physical
disabilities; students with families to support; or students with long-term

*Buchanan County R.A. Nelson Memorial
Scholarship in sum of $250
will be awarded to a Buchanan resident planning to attend or be enrolled at Iowa
State University in the College of Agriculture. Student must be or have been in the
upper 1/3 of HS graduating class.
Mr. Nelson passed away in a car accident in 1957. He was a member of the Buchanan County
Extension Council and Farm Bureau Board. Contact guidance office for

East Buchanan
Community School District has been named as a beneficiary of the Carl R. Arnold Charitable Trust.
Proceeds from this trust will be given annually in the form of scholarships to
graduating seniors who are pursuing education beyond high school in a two or
four year accredited college program. It is preferred that the
scholarships be awarded to students pursuing studies in an agricultural-related
field. Three (3) scholarships, each
in the amount of $2091.16, will be given.
