East Buchanan Boomerang Program

Providing Education in Character Development

East Buchanan Community Schools, in cooperation with Iowa State University Extension Service, has implemented a character education program called "BOOMERANG!". Through the character education program, certain traits such as caring, respect, responsibility, fairness, trustworthiness, and citizenship will be stressed in order to maintain a positive, safe, and orderly learning environment and to prepare youth to become responsible, productive members of society.

Trained high school students serve as "team teachers" to facilitate character education lessons with 4th grade students once a week over the course of the semester. Paula McGraw serves as the advisor of the program and will be in the classrooms weekly to provide support to the team teachers.

These students meet twice a week, once to plan their lesson and review student notebooks, and once to meet with the 4th grade students. This is a 17 week program that concludes with a community service day.

Team teachers were educated in the development level, concerns, and perspectives of students whom they will be teaching; the specific concepts the students will learn; and the basic skills and principles for presenting lessons.

Two hundred fifty students in Northeast Iowa school districts have been trained as BOOMERANG! team teachers.
