The American Legion wrote Need A Lift, a college financial aid guide, to spare you frustration and save you time as you plan your "after-high-school" education.  While the focus of this guide is to help children of deceased and disabled veterans in their pursuit of higher education, all students can benefit from the information offered.  This guide is filled with scholarships, grants, fee waivers, student loans, and the organizations that offer them.  Also included is information to help you select a school, apply for student financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), learn about loan forgiveness, understand tax credits, and much more!

 

Distinguished Young Women of Iowa Scholarship Program, formerly Iowa Junior Miss Scholarship program, is available to all senior girls in high school.  Scholarships in sums of $350 to $1,500 will be awarded. Participants are evaluated in the following categories: Scholastics (20% of overall score), Interview (25% of overall score), Talent (25% of overall score), Fitness (15% of overall score), and Self-Expression (15% of overall score). Preliminary programs are tentatively scheduled for October and November 2011.  The state program is held in Ottumwa, Iowa, in March 2012.  Stop in office for entry form.  Deadline is September 30, 2011.

 

WendyÕs High School Heisman Program recognizes seniors who exhibit excellence in the classroom, on the field, and within their communities.  Student must have a least a ÒBÓ grade average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport.  The first 30,000 students that complete an application will receive a WendyÕs Gift Card in sum of $10!  The online application at www.wendysheisman.com must be completed by the student and confirmed by Counselor by October 2. 

 

*AES Engineers is pleased to be able to continue providing $500 scholarships to high school seniors or college students (regardless of courses being studied) who meet certain criteria. You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible.  Students must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words in answer to one of the two questions that are posted on our site: www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm.  Deadline is October 5, 2012.

 

UNI Art Scholarship in sum of $1,500-6,000/per year is available to incoming freshmen.  Applicant must major in Art: studio, education, or history.  Complete the Department of Art Scholarship Application and Department/College Scholarship Information Form, available on the Department of Art web site:  www.uni.edu/artdept/ScholarshipsHS.html.  Application deadline is October 14, 2011.

 

Horatio Alger Iowa Scholarship Program will award 6 $5,000 scholarships funded through the generosity of Walter and Suzanne Scott Foundation.  Scholarship criteria include being a senior in high school, financial need, integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity.  Online application may be accessed at www.horatioalger.com/scholarships.  Deadline is October 30, 2010.

 

Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program is awarding 104 $20,000 scholarships to eligible students in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. National Scholars receive an all expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. during the spring of their senior year to participate in the National Scholars Conference.  Student must have financial need, be involved in co-curricular and community activities, and have at least a 2.0 GPA. COCA-COLA SCHOLARS PROGRAM  - Each year 50 awards are for $20,000, payable in equal installments over a four-year period, and another 200 awards for $10,000, also payable over a four-year period.  The scholarship can be used for any line of study at any accredited U.S. college or university.  Scholarships awarded to seniors are based on leadership, community commitment, academic achievement, and employment. Applicant must be carrying a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of their junior year.  Apply online at: www.coca-colascholars.org.  Deadline is October 31.

 

Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card.  Each year, a minimum of ten students will be designated Ron Brown Scholars and will receive $10,000 annually for four years, for a total of $40,000. The recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend an accredited four-year college or university of their choice within the United States. For information see http://www.ronbrown.org/home.aspx.  There are two deadlines for applications: November 1st - application will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program AND forwarded to a select and limited number of additional scholarship providers.  January 9th - final postmarked deadline in order to be considered for only the Ron Brown Scholar Program ONLY.

 

*Dr Pepper is sponsoring a nationwide promotion this 2011 college football season in which they are giving away $1,000,000 in tuition assistance.  Scholarship America's Scholarship Management Services is partnering with Dr Pepper to help distribute the tuition assistance payments.  To enter the promotion, entrants must have access to the internet and the capability to upload a short video.  Promotion is open to anyone over the age of 18.  Entrants submit a one-minute video explaining how they would make an impact in their life, their community, or the world if they won free tuition from Dr Pepper.  Throughout the football season, over 60 students will be awarded $2,500 in tuition assistance from Dr Pepper.  Dr Pepper will select an additional 25 grand prize winners who will be invited to attend with one guest one of the five end-of-season football games  (the SEC, ACC, Big 10, Pac 12, and Cotton Bowl) to compete in a contest at halftime.  Selection of these grand prize winners will be limited to students under the age of 25.  The students will be given a chance to throw for $100,000 in tuition during the halftime of the game.  The winner will walk away with $100,000 in tuition and the runner-up will receive $23,000.  Interested students should go to www.drpepper.com.

*The 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is a unique opportunity honoring young people for outstanding volunteer service.  Students in grades 5-12 who have been involved in a volunteer activity are eligible.  Students complete an online application at www.prudential.com/spirit, print it out, and give to principal or counselor.  East Buchanan may submit one MS and one HS application.  State Honorees receive $1,000 and all-expense-paid trip with a parent to Washington, D.C. in May for several days.  Applications are due to Counselor Nov. 1.

*The Voice of Democracy is an audio essay contest for students in grades 9-12. The annual contest, which is designed to foster patriotism, allows students the opportunity to voice their opinion in a three to five minute essay based on patriotism. Students can enter by submitting the required entry form, along with their essay and recording to a local VFW Post--Independence. The scholarship program annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships. The first-place national winner receives a $30,000 scholarship. Besides competing for the top scholarship prize, as well as other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $16,000, each Department's first-place winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.  Entry form may be accessed at www.vfw.org/resources/pdf/vod.pdf.  Mail entry form and audio essay to the local VFW post. Further directions are listed on the entry form.  Deadline is November 1, 2011.

 

College of Business Administration at University of Northern Iowa would like to invite high school seniors who intend to major in business and are considering attending UNI to apply to participate in the UNI Business Freshman Scholarship Day!  In order to qualify for an invitation, students must have both ACT math and composite scores of 27 or higher.  A description of program, as well as application, can be found at www.uni.edu/finaid.  Click on UNIversity Scholarship Application (USA).  Seniors will compete for scholarships that will range from one-year $2,000 to 4-year renewable $6,500 scholarships.  Application and transcript must be received no later than November 4, 2011.

 

Wartburg Presidential & Regents Scholarships will be awarded in sums of $13,000-full tuition. To qualify, students must have a minimum ACT score of 23 and rank in the top 25% of class and have a cum GPA of 3.5 or above. All awards are based on merit, not financial need, and are renewable for a maximum of eight terms, contingent upon full-time enrollment and a minimum 2.7 cum GPA.  See www.wartburg.edu/finaid/scholarships.html.  Students who qualify and choose to participate in one of the Scholarship Days (Nov. 13; Jan. 15 or 21) have the opportunity to increase their Regents or Presidential Scholarship.

 

+Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association will award seven  scholarships (minimum of $1,000) to college sophomore (or higher) students seeking degrees in areas of study relating to careers in the ready mixed concrete and construction/engineering industries.  See http://www.financialaid.iastate.edu/scholarships/view.php?id=299.  Deadline is November 15, 2011.

 

UNI Department of Theatre awards over $45,000 in tuition scholarships to its majors in sums of $750 to $2,500.  Applicant must have a 3.0 GPA or rank in the upper third of their class.  See www.uni.edu/theatre/department/prospective-students/scholarship-information/scholarship-day-dec-2-2011.  Deadline is November 18, 2011.

 

PCI Academy (former The Salon Professional Academy) will award one scholarship up to $3,000 per Iowa high school for Cosmetology, Massage, Esthetics or Nail Technology.  Stop in office for application.  Deadline is November 30, 2011.

 

Dr. Howard Bowen Scholarship will be awarded to five (5) students attending Grinnell College in sum of $25,000 per year.  See www.grinnell.edu/admission/apply/iowa.  Deadline is December 2, 2011.

 

Elks National Foundation is offering 500 Most Valuable Student Scholarship Awards in sums of $1,000-$15,000 per year for four years to high school seniors.  Application is available at www.elks.org/enf/scholars based on financial need, leadership and scholarship.  Application deadline is December 2, 2011.

 

*The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program "A Constitutional Speech Contest" is open to students in grades 9-12.  Scholarships in sum of $500-$18,000 will be awarded.  Local contests (Aurora, Independence, Quasqueton, Winthrop) must be completed by December 4.  See www.ialegion.org/oratorical.htm for rules.

 

The AXA Achievement Scholarship, in association with U.S. News & World Report and managed by Scholarship America, provides $670,000 in annual scholarships to high school seniors throughout the nation.  Fifty-two (52) scholarship recipients, known as AXA Achievers, will be selected – one from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. These recipients will receive one-time scholarships of $10,000 each.  Ten (10) AXA Achievers will be selected as national recipients from the pool of 52, earning an additional one-time scholarship of $15,000, a computer and the offer of an internship at an AXA office. AXA Achievers are ethnically and economically diverse, but share these qualities:  Ambition, drive and determination, setting and reaching goals, respect for self, family and community, ability to succeed in college.  Go to www.axa-achievement.com to learn more about the scholarship program and download an application.  Apply by December 1, 2011.

 

*Hispanic Scholarship Fund offers various scholarships in sums of $1,000-$12,000 to students of Hispanic heritage.  Student must have a 3.00 GPA.  See www.hsf.net/.  Deadlines vary from Dec. 15, 2011, to Feb. 15, 2012.

 

*Iowa Firefighters Association will award a $500 scholarship to a high school or college student wishing to pursue educational commitment in the field of fire science.  An application and essay of 500 words or less about goals, community service, hobbies and why you want to receive a degree in fire science needs to be submitted.  Scholarship will be paid to student with proof of first semester completion with a 3.00 GPA or better.  See www.iafireassn.org for application.  Application process is open from October 1 to December 15.

 

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation will be providing a minimum of 150 scholarships in sum of $1,000-$10,000 to high school seniors showing entrepreneurial spirit and initiative by owning and operating their own small business.  Check www.nfib.com/yef/yef-programs/young-entrepreneur-awards.  Deadline is Dec. 15, 2011.

 

The E. Wayne Cooley Scholarship Award was established in 1993 as a tribute to the man who served as Executive Director of the Iowa GirlsÕ High School Athletic Union from 1954 through 2002. The recipient of this award is recognized as being representative of the most elite of the superlative Iowa Girl, not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom, in her school and in her community. Her profile will reflect discipline, perseverance, character, citizenship and leadership, which personified the life and expectations of E. Wayne Cooley.  Each high school is limited to one nomination.  The criteria for the award are as follows: cum GPA 3.75+, ACT 23+, must have participated in at least two sports each year of high school and shall have earned at least one varsity letter in a minimum of two sports.  Five finalists will receive a $1,000 scholarship grant. The winner will receive a $15,000 scholarship ($3,750 annually). Deadline December 30, 2011.

 

*Alice Madden Barton Scholarship program was created in memory of Alice Madden Barton, the mother of Great Clips CEO Ray Barton and President Rhoda Olsen.  Scholarships are available for current students, high school students and those pursuing a career in cosmetology or barbering. These scholarships can be used at any cosmetology or barbering school. See www.greatclips.com/saloncareers.html.  Deadline for applications is June 30 and December 31.

Imagine America, sponsored by the Career College Foundations, is a $1,000 career education award that is available to seniors who are pursuing an education at participating career colleges across the United States.  Each school may select up to three seniors to receive the scholarships.  Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or greater, financial need, and demonstrated voluntary community service during senior year. National Wild Turkey FederationÕs Academic Scholarship in sum of $250 (local) will be awarded to a senior who is a member of NWTF and supports the preservation of the hunting tradition and has a 3.0 GPA. See www.nwtf.org/jakes/xtreme/scholarships.html.  Deadline is January 1.

 

United States JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship Program awards $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors who plan to continue their education. See Guidance Office for application.  Deadline is January 6, 2012.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program will be given to 1,000 outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students to provide an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest.

*Iowa Cheerleader Coaches Association offers $500 scholarships to high school senior cheerleaders and current college cheerleaders. Applicant must have a cumulative 3.5 GPA at end of their junior year.  See www.iowacheercoaches.org/Scholarships.htm.  Deadline is January 15.

 

Scholarships for incoming freshman in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University are awarded in varying amounts to full-time students. Applications must be submitted online between October 15 and January 15 prior to year of entry. See www.ag.iastate.edu/scholarships/freshman.  Priority deadline for freshmen applications is January 15. 

 

*ISEA Scholarships for Future Teachers helps sons or daughters of Association members become teachers. Applicants must have completed 60 semester hours (or equivalent) or they must be considered a junior at the college or university in which they are enrolled. A statement of enrollment in the teacher education program is also required. In addition, applicants must also indicate by their transcript and a written statement their intent to become a teacher. The McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship in sum of up to $10,000 per academic year for 4 years and an additional $2,500 for a summer abroad program is available to all high school seniors who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own business while in high school.  Started by Andy McKelvey, former CEO of Monster.com and lifelong entrepreneur, the McKelvey Foundation began the Entrepreneurial Scholarship program in 2004.  To qualify student must a graduating senior, attend a 4 year college or university, own and operate a genuine business (non-profits are eligible), have at least one employee, even if only part time.  Application must be completed online at www.mckelveyfoundation.org by January 25. Not accepting any applications for the 2011/12 academic school year.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa is offering $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors. Scholarship awards are given based on a studentÕs demonstrated academic achievement, financial need and community involvement. Electrical & Computer Engineering Scholarship, University of Iowa, in sums up to $16,500 each will be awarded to 5 students. Students must complete the online application at www.engineering.uiowa.edu/sdc/scholarships.php.  Applications are due January 31, 2012.

 

Engineering Excellence Scholarship, University of Iowa, in sum of $1,000-$3,000 will be awarded to 100 engineering majors. Students must complete the online application at www.engineering.uiowa.edu/sdc/scholarships.php.  Applications are due January 31, 2012.

 

Strayer-Rairden Scholarship in sum of $1,000 renewable for up to three years will be awarded to a freshman attending University of Iowa majoring in physics or astronomy. Check out

Upper Iowa University is offering Students of Excellence Scholarship which is a renewable 4-year full-tuition scholarship to elite incoming freshmen.  To be eligible, student must have at least 3.5 GPA, ACT score of 26+, and accepted as a freshman at UIU by January 31.  See www.uiu.edu/excellence for more information.  Competition is February 18, 2012.

 

The AXA Achievement Community Scholarship Program brings advice and access to higher education into every community in which AXA has a presence.  Every AXA Advisors' branch office nationwide distributes up to 12 $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors who live and attend high school in their area.

Selection of winners, known as AXA Achievers, is made by our nonprofit partner, Scholarship America.  An AXA Achiever must demonstrate:

Elks National Foundation presents 250 Legacy Awards in sum of $1,000/4 years to any senior whose parent or grandparent is an Elk member in good standing. Hixson Opportunity Award is a half-tuition scholarship (4 yrs) offered annually to a student from each of IowaÕs counties who will be attending Iowa State University.  The award recognizes the obstacles and adversity some students face.  Application available at www.dso.iastate.edu/hixson/application/ Deadline is February 1, 2012.

 

Grand Lodge of Iowa, A.F. & A.M. will be awarding approximately 60 scholarships in the sum of $2,000 each to high school seniors going on to college or vocational training.  Applicants need not have a Masonic connection.  Application may be accessed at www.grandlodgeofiowa.com.  Then click on ÒScholarships of the Grand Lodge.Ó  Deadline is February 1, 2012.

 

Multicultural Vision Program Award (MVP) is a four-year full tuition grant at Iowa State University for 100 minority high school seniors who demonstrate potential in ways that go beyond class ranking or test scores may apply.  See www.dso.iastate.edu/msa/scholarship/mvp.html.  Application deadline is February 1, 2012. 

 

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution awards multiple scholarships to students showing dedication to the pursuit of degrees in diverse disciplines including history, law, nursing, and education.  Applicants must obtain a letter of sponsorship from local DAR Chapter.  Application forms may be obtained by sending a self addressed staped envelope to the Office of Committee Services, NSDAR, 1776 D Street NW, Washington, DE 2006-5303.  See www.dar.org/natsociety/edout_scholar.cfm for more information.  Deadlines vary from February 1 to April 15.

 

The Tim Dwight Foundation, Inc. Scholarship Program awards scholarships to students with academic merit, financial need, great potential and who have overcome adversity or challenges to achieve success in their lives. Possible examples of extenuating circumstances include but are not limited to students from one-parent families; students with social, mental or physical disabilities; students with families to support; or students with long-term health issues. To be considered for a scholarship, you must be a graduating senior and have applied and ultimately be accepted and enrolled on a full-time base at University of Iowa, Iowa Sate University or University of Northern Iowa, and submit an official transcript. With this scholarship, Veridian hopes to help prepare students for future challenges, both inside and outside the credit union movement. Meyerhoff Memorial Scholarship awards are issued on two levels in the amounts of $500 and $800 to high school seniors, past recipients, or high school graduates already enrolled in college, university, or technical-vocational school.  Mr. & Mrs. Meyerhoff were killed in a plane crash more than 30 years ago.  They had no children, but left a trust.  Students in Black Hawk County and surrounding counties receive scholarships.  Deadline is March 5, 2012.

Laymon A. The Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship awards approximately 80 scholarships in sum of $400 to needy and worthy students attending University of Iowa full-time. Each recipient must be of Protestant faith and a resident of State of Iowa.  Application deadline is May 1, 2012. 

 

Stephen Paris Scholarship in sum of $250 will be awarded to student from East Buchanan High School as well as Starmont HS and West Delaware HS pursuing their education in an agri-business field.  Deadline is May 1, 2010.

 

Andy Triplett Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity at the UNI.  One $1,000 scholarship and five $100 scholarships will be awarded to incoming freshman male students who excel in the areas of scholarship, leadership, athletics, and community service.  There is no obligation to join Sigma Phi Epsilon.  Apply online at www.triplettscholars.com.  Deadline is May 6, 2011.

*Robert D. Blue Scholarship, named after former Iowa Governor Robert D. Blue, awards $500 to $1,000 students who demonstrate literary and scholastic ability; exhibit qualities of truth, courage, and fellowship; and display moral force of character. Last year the Foundation funded seven $1,000 scholarships.  Applicants can be current high school seniors or students already enrolled at an Iowa college or university.  Application is available online at www.rdblue.org.  Deadline is May 10.

 

Beta Sigma Psi will award three Darryl Jahn Memorial Scholarships in sum of $1,500 each to incoming Lutheran men for their education at Iowa State University. *The UCB Family Epilepsy Scholarship Programª provides financial support to encourage academic and personal achievement not just to people with epilepsy, but also to the family members and caregivers who contribute to their successes. TYLENOL Scholarship will award ten students $10,000 scholarships and 30 students will receive $5,000.  Students must be pursuing healthcare-related education. *NAFB Foundation Scholarship--Since 1975, the NAFB Foundation has provided financial support and educational opportunities in the form of scholarships to assist students in pursuit of careers in agricultural communications. Currently the NAFB Foundation offers three annual college scholarships, including two each for $4,000, as well as the Glenn Kummerow Memorial Scholarship for $5,000. These scholarships are recognized at the National NAFB Convention, and the winners also receive an expense-paid trip to attend the convention as part of the award.  Applicants must be a junior, senior, or graduate student prior to application deadline. Applicants must be enrolled in or transferring to an agricultural communications curriculum with concentration and/or application in broadcast media (this may include Internet/online media distribution). *Buchanan County Pork Producers will award a $500 scholarship to a student who plans to attend a two or four year accredited college/university.  Parents must be members of the Buchanan County Pork Producers.  Applications are in Guidance Office.  Deadline is June 1, 2012. 

 

The Balanced Man Scholarship by Sigma Phi Epsilon is offering (1) $1,000 and (2) $500 scholarships to incoming male freshmen attending Iowa State University in the fall.  For application, see counselor.  Deadline is June 2, 2011.

 

Nile C. Charlie Burkart Scholarship in sum of $1,000 for four years will be awarded to a senior who is a resident within the boundaries of the Iowa Section of the PGA.  (Iowa Section PGA is bounded on the west by U.S. Highway 71.) *Alice Madden Barton Scholarship program was created in memory of Alice Madden Barton, the mother of Great Clips CEO Ray Barton and President Rhoda Olsen.  Scholarships are available for current students, high school students and those pursuing a career in cosmetology or barbering. Imagine America, sponsored by the Career College Foundations, is a $1,000 career education award that is available to seniors who are pursuing an education at participating career colleges across the United States.  Each school may select up to three seniors to receive the scholarships.  Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or greater, financial need, and demonstrated voluntary community service during senior year.
