184      BAND            

GRADE LEVEL:  8+

Band is a year long course with studies of music from the marching band, concert band, jazz band, pep band, solo, and small ensemble genres.  Students are also required to attend one lesson outside of class per six-day cycle that counts as part of the course grade.  Students are also required to attend scheduled performances such as concerts, athletic events, and contests/festivals.  The course begins with  Marching Band Camp in August.  Band students may participate in jazz band.

 

 

 

183      CONCERT CHOIR                

GRADE LEVEL:  9+

NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS:  3

Concert choir is a year long course focusing on teaching students to sing in a mature, healthy manner, increase their musical awareness and appreciation for all types of music, and develops their music skills.  A variety of age appropriate music is studied and performed during daily rehearsals and concerts throughout the year.  Private voice lessons are required outside of rehearsal time to nurture vocal development and enhance musical skills.  Students have the opportunity to participate in additional activities including honor choirs and contests for both soloists and smaller ensembles.  Grades are based upon attendance at concerts, rehearsals, lessons, participation, attitude, and knowledge of current material and musical concepts.  Concert choir meets everyday.

 

 

 

185      INTRO TO MUSIC THEORY            

GRADE LEVEL:  9+

OFFERED:  Tri 1, Tri 2, or Tri 3

(1 credit, included in GPA)

RECOMMENDED:  Band, Concert Choir, or Instructor Approval                                                                                         

Intro to Music Theory is designed to give students an insight to how music works and why we perceive it in the way we do.  An understanding of music theory improves the total musician, regardless of current ability level; therefore, any student musicians are encouraged to join.  The course will focus on basic composition of music, listening, playing various instruments, and becoming familiar with the 'nuts and bolts' of music.

 

 

 

182      COLOR GUARD        

GRADE LEVEL:  9+

(Enrollment in Color Guard is by audition only.)                                                                            

 

Enrollment in Color Guard is by audition only.  The purpose of Color Guard is to enhance the performance of the marching band through the use of color and motion and to learn to work as a unit as well as individually for solo/soli performances.  The flag corps is open to students not enrolled in band.
