FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES

 

 

Family and Consumer Sciences is a program of courses that prepares the student for the dual role of wage earner and family member.  All courses are designed for both male and female students.  A student who completes the total sequence of courses would be well prepared to live independently or as family member and begin an entry level job or secure more education in the areas of food, clothing, child care, or interior design.  Up to 4 credits may be received at designated area community colleges upon successful completion of Child Development, Parenting, and Child Care Experience. Three credits may be received at Hawkeye Community College upon successful completion of Creative Sewing and Fashion Merchandising.

 

 

  81      BEGINNING FOODS

GRADE LEVEL:  9+

This course is designed to improve food preparation skills, gain experience in using kitchen equipment, create opportunities for cooperative learning, and develop technical reading skills.  Nutrition, food safety and kitchen safety will be emphasized.  Students will participate in a lab setting creating and evaluating food dishes.  This course is recommended for Advanced Foods.

 

 

  79      ADVANCED FOODS            

GRADE LEVEL:  10+

This class provides students an opportunity to participate in an ÒEntrepreneurshipÓ setting.  Students will plan and prepare foods for sale through an in-school bakers and deli called ÒThe Feed Store.Ó  Other topics of study may include recipe costs, yeast breads, meal management, safety and sanitation, kitchen equipment, and a cooking show video.  A major portion of the class focuses on skills necessary in the workplace.  Students will also study table setting and table manners.  Profits from the bakery and deli will be used to fund a fine dining experience emphasizing dining etiquette.

 

 

  87      +PARENTING

GRADE LEVEL:  9+

Anyone, who will be a parent someday, as well as those should take this course interested in being a teacher, teacherÕs aide, or child care provider.  The units of study include the rewards and responsibilities of parenting, readiness for parenting, fetal alcohol syndrome, shaken baby syndrome, teen parenting, costs of raising of a child, child support, child abuse, positive guidance, health and safety, and the importance of play.  An important part of Parenting class is to be responsible for caring for a Real Care Baby for three (3) days.

 

 

83        +CHILD DEVELOPMENT     

GRADE LEVEL:  9+

Students in this course will study the concepts of growth and development from conception through age 3.  A unit on birth will also be covered.  Students will learn age appropriate behaviors and skills to help a child reach his/her potential in all areas of development, including physical, mental, social and emotional.  This class should be taken by anyone who will be a parent as well as those interested in being a teacher, teacherÕs aide, or child care worker.

 

 

82        +CHILD CARE EXPERIENCE

GRADE LEVEL:  9+

NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS:  2

OFFERED:  Tri 2-3

RECOMMENDED:  Child Development or Parenting or approval of instructor

 

This course will cover child care options, preschool, and the development of children ages 4-6.

 

Students will observe and interact with children at KidsÕ Corner Daycare and East Buchanan Preschool weekly.  Students will learn how to help children develop successfully in all areas of development.

 

This course should be taken by anyone who is interested in working with and caring for children.  The attitudes and knowledge developed will make some students better parents.  It will lead others to effective and rewarding careers in child care.

 

 

+Successful completion of the three above courses allows the student to receive up to 4 credits from area community colleges when the student enters a Child Care Program within 2 years of high school graduation.  The schools listed below will allow college credit to those who successfully complete these courses.  See instructor for more information.

  84      CREATIVE SEWING  

GRADE LEVEL:  9+

Sewing is a useful skill that is as handy in the home as it is in the workplace.  The course will include fabric selection and care related to textile products.  Students will learn the skills needed for sewing when using the sewing machine, serger, and embroidery machine.  Projects will be the studentÕs choice and may include clothing and/or household furnishings.  This class should be taken by anyone who is interested in learning to sew as a lifelong skill or is interested in a career related to fabrics and sewing.

 

 

 89       ADVANCED SEWING

Build on the skills you learned in Creative Sewing, plus learn a variety of new techniques.  Advanced Sewing is a course for anyone who wants to learn more about special techniques and skills needed for more challenging projects.  Students will have the opportunity to create individual clothing and/or home furnishing projects.

 


 85       FASHION MERCHANDISING                                                          

GRADE LEVEL:  9+

NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS:  1

OFFERED:  Tri 1 or Tri 3

 

This course introduces the student to the fashion industry and career possibilities.  Students will explore textile fibers, study fabric production, and learn how ready to wear fashions are produced for today's markets.  They will study construction techniques found in ready to wear and custom sewn apparel.  The student will learn to evaluate apparel and fashion accessories for quality and marketing potential.  Students will do fashion sketching using the elements and principles of design and will choose a project to complete.  A unit on the importance of wardrobe choices in regard to appearance and self-concept, clothing needs, and care of clothing will be included.

 

Successful completion of the above course allows the student to receive 3 credits from Hawkeye Community College when the student enters the Fashion Merchandising Management program within 2 years of high school graduation. See instructor for more information.

 

 

  86      INTERIOR DESIGN                                                               

GRADE LEVEL:  9+

This course will help students learn how to choose a place to live and how to design a livable interior.  Units of study include decisions in choosing a place to live, buying versus renting apartments, floor plans, furniture selection and arrangement, the elements and principles of design, and Universal Design/architecture.  Each student will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge learned when designing an interior as a final trimester project.  This course should be taken by anyone who plans on choosing his/her own place to live someday, as well as any student who plans to pursue a career in interior design, home furnishings, architecture, or real estate.

 

 

  80      BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY 

GRADE LEVEL:  11-12

NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS:  1

OFFERED:  Tri 1 or Tri 3

 

Students enrolled in this course will learn skills to help prepare them for productive and satisfying home and work lives.  The main emphasis is how work and family choices and roles influence each other and how to achieve a balance between work and family.  Some of the skills covered include time and financial management, communication, relationship skills, writing skills, wellness, and balancing other resources.
