*IMPORTANT CHANGES IN FLL DEPARTMENT POLICY AND LAS GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
For some time the Department of Foreign
Languages and Literatures considered a change in policy for its beginning
language courses in German, French, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. More than half
of the students in 101/102 language courses are seniors and juniors, who are
attempting to fulfill a language requirement late in their university career
and who are taking a beginning course after having already completed two years
of that language in high school. ISU would like to devote more resources to
students who are either truly beginning their study of a language or who are
pursuing higher skill levels of study. After evaluating a number of
possibilities the Department adopted a new and efficient plan for students of
first year French German, Latin, Russian and Spanish which
became effective Fall 2001. Below
is a brief outline of the plan. For more detailed information, contact the FLL
office, 515-294-4046.
Effective Fall 2001 the policy on admission to French, German, Latin,
Russian, or Spanish 101 ...
Policy affects ALL Iowa State University students regardless of college or
department of enrollment: (These restrictions do not apply to first-year
courses in Chinese, Greek, Italian, or Portuguese.)
* 3 years or more
of high school study: -- may not
take 101 or 102 at all.
* Students with no previous experience, or one year of high school study: -- may take 101.
* More than one
year but fewer than three years: must
take the test-out: -- if pass at first year (101/102) then gets one year of
credit; cannot take 101 -- if pass at
one semester (101), may take 102.
Encourage 107X -- if fail test-out (0 credits), must take 107X before 102. The faculty of the FLL
Department are confident this new plan has many advantages.
* It offers
greater flexibility for students,
* It encourages
students to complete their language requirement in a timely and efficient
fashion,
* It allows
students with only two years of high school language study to test out of
101/102 and to immediately receive eight college credits,
* It makes good
use of faculty resources.

RECOMMENDED PREPARATION FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES, BUSINESS SCHOOLS,
AND VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL SCHOOLS
Community colleges, vocational
technical schools and business schools have "open-door policies" and
usually do not require specific courses for admission. Students who plan to attend one of these
types of schools after graduation should discuss their choice of high school
subjects with the counselor. The same
is true for students who plan to enter the military service or seek full time
employment after graduation.
NCAA
The NCAA, or National Collegiate
Athletic Association, serves as the athletics governing body for more than
1,280 colleges, universities, conferences and organizations. Member colleges and universities develop
the rules and guidelines for athletics eligibility and athletics competition
for each of the three NCAA divisions.
One of the differences among the three divisions is that colleges and
universities in Divisions I and II may offer athletics
scholarships, while Division III colleges and universities may not.
The NCAA Initial-Eligibility
Clearinghouse (the clearinghouse) is an organization that works with the NCAA
to determine a studentŐs eligibility for athletics participation in his or her
first year of college enrollment.
Students who want to participate in college sports during their first
year of enrollment in college must register with the clearinghouse. Registration requirements include
completing a core curriculum. See
Guidance Counselor for more information.
