  11      Compacted English                                                             

GRADE LEVEL: 9

This course is designed for students who have been identified as gifted in English/Language Arts. Students who are enrolled should be prepared to move at a very quick pace and use higher order thinking skills on a daily basis. This course will cover the standards and benchmarks designed for both English I and II in one year (three trimesters). Areas of study will include vocabulary, grammar, writing, and reading comprehension. Projects completed will include, but are not limited to, two Shakespearean plays, three novels, and two research projects.

 

 

407      Post-Secondary                                                                   

GRADE LEVEL:  11-12

OFFERED:  Sem 1 or 2

(1 1/2 credit per semester - included in GPA)

 

Student may take a college level course not offered by EBCS on ICN, World Wide Web, or campus.  The Post Secondary Enrollment Option law allows the school district to pay up to $250 for successful completion of the course.  Student will receive both high school and college credit for successful completion.  It is expected the course will be completed by the end of the semester. 

 

            POST SECONDARY COURSES are offered by Hawkeye Community College at

Independence Hawkeye Center, Kirkwood Community College, and Iowa State University.

The cadet teaching program is the released time of juniors and seniors who are not failing academic subjects and are carrying five academic subjects to aid teachers in the classroom.  (The student does not become the teacher.)  Students must report to the teacher every day for a 45 minute period.  Students will be expected to be on time each day and will perform such duties as the teacher assigns.  (Examples - copy worksheets, help with bulletin boards, and help students individually.)  The teacher the student is working under will evaluate the student on his/her work while under the teacher's supervision and give the student a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F).

 

 

221      DIRECTED STUDY                                                              

GRADE LEVEL:  9+

NUMBER OF TRIMESTERS:  3

(.5 credit per trimester - not included in GPA)

 

This credit may be used toward the accumulation of the required credits for graduation, but may not be used to replace a required subject.  The student shall receive either a Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) for each trimester.  If a student takes a core course in the resource room, he/she will be awarded full credit for that course and directed study would be an audit course only, not included in earned credits or GPA.

 

 

1            DRIVER EDUCATION

This is a course in which the potential driver may upon satisfactory completion obtain a license on his/her sixteenth birthday.  The state law requires thirty (30) hours of classroom work in conjunction with six (6) hours of behind the wheel driving.  Students will be graded on classroom work and driving.  Students should have prior driving experience before they take driver education.

This program focuses on manufacturing careers in metalworking.  Students participate in internships during two summers and during school year.  Program combines specific high school classes and hands-on training.
