England
England has great nightlife, attractions and vibrant cities. It has a pleasant and green countryside.
London
London is one of the favorite places to visit in England because of landmark sights like Big Ben, historically rich Westminster Abbey, and St. Pauls Cathedral. The city also has some of the worlds greatest museums and art galleries, and more parkland then most other capitals.
Canterbury Cathedral
The most beautiful and impressive cathedral in England is the Archbishop of Canterbury. It evolved in stages and reflects a number of styles. Canterbury was damaged severely by bombing in World War 2. For 800 years it has attracted flocks of tourists.
Durham
It is not the most refined cathedral in the world. Its the most dramatic cathedral city in England. It looks like a time worn cliff instead of a house of worship.
Lake District
Ten million people go to the Lake District. There are many luxuriant green dales, steep mountains, and many lakes.
Oxford
It is the worlds most famous university town. It was a major car-manufacturing center until the terminal decline of the British car industry and is now a thriving center of service industries.
Stonehenge
It is the most famous site in prehistoric Europe. No one knows why the stones were dragged up from South Wales 5000 years ago. It has a ring of enormous stones lintels, inner horseshoe, an outer circle, and a ditch. Not much is known about stonehenge. The stones weigh 50-tons.
York
York has been the capitol of the north for nearly two thousand years. It has a spectacular Gothic cathedral, medieval city walls, historic streets and many teashops and pubs. It is a fascinating city with extraordinary cultural and historical wealth.
Environment
England is eighteen miles from France. Most of England is flat or low-lying. In the north is the Pennines a range of limestone hills. In the west are the Cumbrian Mountains and the Lake District. South of the Pennines is the densely populated Midlands, and in the southwest peninsula, known as the West country, is a plateau with granite outcrops, good dairy farming and a rugged coastline. The rest of the country is known as the English Lowlands with a mixture of farmland, low hills, an industrial belt and the city of London.
England's national parks cover about 7% of the country. Englands national parks are not wilderness areas, but they include Areas of Outstanding National Beauty they also are usually privately owned. England was once almost entirely covered with woodland, but tree cover is now the second lowest in Europe after Ireland. The government has been planting conifers to stop this situation, but the pines have turned the soil around them into acid and destroyed large areas of ancient peatland.
Englands climate is mild and damp, temperatures differ by the light winds that blow off its warm seas. The temperatures dont get below freezing in the winter, or much above 86 degrees in the summer. The coldest country is London, and the West Country is the warmest.
