Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was born two years before the American Revolution to a high class New York family. Her childhood was a lonely one so she would read books to pass the time.
On January 25th, 1794 Elizabeth Bayley became Elizabeth Seton when she married young and wealthy William Magee Seton. Only a few years later Will's father died leaving the young couple in charge of his importing business. The business failed and the young couple went bankrupt. In 1803 the couple and their first child out of five traveled to Italy and stayed with their Catholic friends the Filicchis because of William's failing health. The Filicchis introduced them to Catholicism. William died there in December from tuberculosis.
I think Elizabeth has made a big difference on America because her example set the groundwork for future Catholic parochial schools in the U.S. I chose Elizabeth because I had heard her name before and wanted to find out more about her. Now I know all about St. Elizabeth and I hope you learned a lot too.
