Elizabeth Blackwell
Elizabeth Blackwell

I chose Elizabeth Blackwell because I don't know much about her, other than that she was a doctor. When I get older I want to be a pediatrician. For the most part doctors and pediatricians are the same thing other than doctors treat all people and pediatricians only work on little kids.

Facts in Brief:
Birth: February 3, 1821
Parents : Samuel and Hanna Blackwell
Education: Geneva medical School
Died: May 3, 1910

Elizabeth was the fourth out of nine Blackwell children that lived. while she was growing up she had two and six sisters that had died. So she promised herself that she would become a doctor to babies and women.

Both Samuel and Hanna encouraged all their children to be equal. So they could do what ever they wanted in life.

After her fathers sugar business burned in 1832, he decided to move to the US and start all over. They first emigrated to New York and later moved to Cincinnati. In 1837 Samuel Blackwell died, when Elizabeth was 16. Elizabeth and her sister Emily were forced to support their family. Elizabeth taught school for several years, but later 1844 she decided to become a physician.

After several rejections she was finally accepted by Geneva Medical College, mostly as a joke. After everyone saw how well she was doing they told her that it was just a joke told her to leave, but she wouldn't leave. She wanted to become a doctor and that is what she was going to do. After she finished college she went to Paris to learn more about mediation.

Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman doctor in the USA in 1889. During the civil war she organized a National Heath Society. Most importantly she fought for the admission of women to medical colleges.
