The Holocaust
The Holocaust

"First they came for the Communists but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out; Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists but I was not one of them, so I did not speak out; Then they came for the Jews but I was not Jewish so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."

Martin Niemoller, 1892-1984

When the war began on September 1, 1939, the main people to die first were the proffesors, artists, writers, politicians, and Catholic priests. Many groups of the Polish were moved or shipped to a camp for "more room." After the Germans got their land, they conquered more than half of the land space from its surrounding countries.

The Holocaust was the destruction of more than 6 million Jews, Communists, Bisexuals, Homosexuals, or any other followers that id not believe in what Hitler was trying to obtain. Literally, the word Holocaust means a complete burned sacrifice. That may frighten some because that term is very closely related to what happened to those 6 million.

There were many camps of the Holocaust, but none compared to the one in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest killing center of the Holocaust. The main camp was located on the outskirts of Oswiecim, in Poland.

Here is a picture of Jewish children awaiting their punishment outside of the Auschwitz camp.

On August 8, 1938, the Nazis began to build one large camp near Mauthausen, Austria. It was called the mother camp becaue it was made up of 49 sub-camps. Between August 8, 1938 and May 5, 1945, almost 195,000 people were imprisoned in these camps. Today this camp is still there and is main tourist attraction in Austria. More than 1 million tourists, a year, look on in horror as they see the gas chamber, the strangle room, and the bins in which the Nazis piled thousands of prisoners treasures.
