Yangtze River
The Yangtze River

Location:
The Yangtze River is in the Tanggula Mountains in the Qinhai Province, in China.

Size: 3,915 miles long, making it the worlds third longest river.

Name: It got its name from Changjing which is the name commonly used for the middle reaches of the river, while the locals call the lower reaches, from Yangtzhou to the estuary, the Yangtze. This is the name which, as a result, became established in Europe.

Interesting facts:

  • The river is ice-free all year.

  • The volume of the transportation on the Yangtze River system is greater than the total traffic on all the other rivers and water ways of China combined.

  • Five of China's largest cities are on or near the river system: Shanghil, Wuhan, Chongqing (Chunking), Chengdu (Ch’eng-tu), and Nanjing (Nanking).
