Amazon River


AMAZON RIVER

Location: South America. Starts in the Andes Mountains. Flows Northeast into the Atlantic Ocean.

Size: 4000 miles long. Second largest River in the world. 1.5 miles through 6 miles wide. At some points it is two wide to see across.

Discovered By: Vincent Pizon in 1500.

Name: It was named by Francisco de Orellana. He was attacked by fighting women warriors that lived near the Amazon.

Interesting Information: 200 smaller rivers flow into the Amazon River. Piranhas live in the Amazon.
