  • Location: It flows east across South America and enters the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Size: The Amazon is 3,900 miles long. (6,280 km)

  • Discovered by: Franisco de Orellana, a Spanish soldier in 1541.

  • Name: Franisco named the Amazon River after reporting battles with female warriors. That reminded him of the Amazons of Greek Mythology.

  • Interesting information: The Amazon is the second longest river in the world. Only the Nile is longer. The Amazon passes the most water when talking about volume and flow. Along the Amazon there are many types of animals. About 250 species of mammals, 3,000 kinds of fish, 10,000 kinds of trees, 70,000 plants, and 1,800 different kinds of birds live along the Amazon River
