The Gulf of Mexico



  • Location: The northern border of the Gulf of Mexico is touching the U.S. The eastern is touching Cuba, and the western is touching Mexico. The gulf of Mexico is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the Straits of Florida and to the Caribbean Sea by the Yucatan Channel.

  • Size: The Gulf of Mexico is about 1,800,000 sq. km. and It extends 1770 km. east to west.

  • Interesting Information:

    1) Fernandez de Cordoba was the first Spaniard the touch the Mexican Ground.

    2) The deepest point is in the Mexico Basin (Sigsbee Deep), which lies 17,070 feet (5,203 m) below sea level.

    3) There are 33 major rivers including The Mississippi and Rio Grande.
