When a young girl or a young boy is about 20 or somewhere around 20 they are probably thinking about getting married. before a couple can get married they have to go through a series of steps. the first thing that they have to do is both of them have to join the Amish church, the next step is they not be baptized into the Amish faith and are responsible for following ordunung. The ordnung is a written or unwritten set of rules for daily living. Joining the church prepares the young person for the seriousness of the setting up for their own home.
When the man asks the girl to marries him he would give her a china figure of a clock instead of a ring. Neither of the of them would tell the family until somewhere between July or August. One they tell there families the Father will announce the weddings date and time and invite all the member that will attend.Quilting Bee
Amish woman have been creating exquit siting quilted masterpieces since the mid 1800 some may have been earlier then that, but some people are not sure about it. Many times a year a groups of woman get together for a quilting bee. For them it is a time of socialization. So they can find out what new with every one. These woman get there chance to socialize and catch up with everything whence the house work is all done.
Barn raising
Traditional barn raising has been used to help a newly begun family together as a couple would get married and the whole community would come out for a day or the weekend to build them a new house or barn. For many Amish families barn raising can be fun but hard. With using there own food they don’t have to buy many things.
