Chad's Geography and Climate

Chad is located at 15 degrees North and 19 degrees East in Central Africa south of Libya. Chad has a total of 1.284 million sq. km. of area. Chad has broad, arid plains, deserts, mountains, and lowlands.



Chad's natural resources are petroleum, uranium, natron, kaolin, and fish. Land use in Chad: arable land 3%, permanent pastures 36%, forests and woodland 26%, and other 35%. Chad's lowest point is Djourab Depression which is 160 meters; the highest point is Emi Koussi which is 3,415 meters. Chad is slightly three times larger than Califorina.


Chad is landlocked by Cameroon, Central African Republic, Libya, Niger, Nigeria, and Sudan. Chad has 140 sq. km. of irrigated land. Some natural hazards are hot, dry, dusty winds that occur in north. Chad also has periodic droughts and locust plagues. It has 140 sq. km. of irrigated land.

Chad's climate is tropical in the south and desert-like in north. Some current environment issues are inadequate supplies of potable water, improper waste disposal in rural areas contributes to soil and water pollution, and desertification. Lake Chad is the most significant water body in the Sahel.
